The People Behind Your Project

We're a family-run business built on exceptional craftsmanship and unwavering commitment to our clients. Phil founded The Great Outdawes in 2014 after earning his Diploma of Horticulture and full builders licences, with a vision to create Adelaide's most trusted name in premium outdoor transformations. We specialise in complex, high-end residential projects that demand meticulous attention to detail and flawless execution.

Every trade is managed in-house by our team, giving you a single point of contact and the peace of mind that comes with true accountability. Phil's membership with Master Landscapers SA, where he previously served on the board from 2016 to contribute to industry standards across South Australia, reflects our standing in the industry. But what defines us is the standard we hold ourselves to on every project. Our clients consistently describe us as "a pleasure to have around," a testament to the culture of professionalism and integrity we've cultivated over a decade serving Adelaide's most discerning homeowners.

The existing garden at this 1900s Rose Park home w The existing garden at this 1900s Rose Park home was clean and crisp, but a little too formal for how the owners wanted to live with it. They were after softness: colour, movement, a bit of whimsy and folly to loosen things up against the heritage home and its modern extension. Here's the thinking behind designing for that feeling, planting that shifts through the seasons, grows in, and gives you something new to notice each time you step outside.

When you're working with a sloping block, the back When you're working with a sloping block, the back garden can end up as space you look at more than use. That was Stirling. Terracing the land changed that, carving out level areas that made the whole yard more usable, and better looking for it. Ross and Geraldine talk through how it came together, and the Japanese maple they're already waiting to see back in leaf.

Some gardens start small and grow into something b Some gardens start small and grow into something bigger. Stirling began as a plan to freshen up the grounds during a home reno, but the more Ross and Geraldine saw what was possible, the further it went. A project that grew well past its original brief, and better for it.

It's the details you don't really notice that make It's the details you don't really notice that make a garden feel finished. At Torrens Park, that's the stonework capped so it's as good to run a hand along as it is to look at, the edging that keeps a clean line between lawn and garden bed as it curves through, and the layered planting worked in around the trees rather than clearing them out. None of it shouts for attention, but take them all away and the whole space would feel a little less considered.

At Stirling, much of the brief was about refining At Stirling, much of the brief was about refining and con-temporising what was already on site rather than starting from scratch. The existing stone was reworked into new retaining walls, with a two-tier layout that opened up room for the grandkids to play alongside the garden. The result ties old and new together so the fresh work looks like it's always been part of the home.

A front garden that has been completely revamped t A front garden that has been completely revamped to feel right at home alongside this beautiful character home in the Barossa. New pathways, planting, spaces to sit and unwind and carefully considered details have given the space a fresh look while keeping all the charm that makes the home so special. It will only get better as the garden continues to establish!
